Mission Santa Clara de Asís is the only mission located on a university campus. The mission church was rebuilt five times, the last time after a fire in 1925. A bell given by King Carlos IV in 1798 to Mission Santa Clara hangs in the bell tower in the current church.

Mission Santa Clara Dè Asís had a church. The Indians did have free time. Daily Schedule- 7:00 am bells rang,12:00pm to 2:00pm they ate a meal and took a nap, 3:00pm they went back to work, 5:00pm prayers and devotions, 6:00pm dinner and free time, 8:00pm bedtime for women, 9:00pm bedtime for men.
It was completed 2 1/2 years later, in May 1784. Unlike the two previous temporary churches, which were built of wood, the permanent church was an imposing adobe structure 100 feet long , 22 feet wide and 20 feet high.
At the mission, there were more than 50,000 cattle and sheep . They had 1,300 goats, 300 pigs, and almost 2,000 horses.
The Spanish Viceroy Bucareli’s grand design intended Mission Dolores (and its Presidio) to protect the mouth of San Francisco Bay while Mission Santa Clara was to anchor the South Bay receiving goods and services meant for the new Pueblo of San Jose.
